Cutting Edge Brass (July 2013)

On 13th July 2013, Colchester New Music’s Cutting Edge Brass concert was held at the Headgate Theatre, Colchester.

Works from the Cutting Edge Brass call for scores were combined with submissions from Colchester New Music members, and performed by the Bespoke Brass quintet. Directed by Steve Drury (bio below), the ensemble includes Steve Tomalin on trumpet, Eddie Morgan on horn, Paul Yarrow on trombone and Chris Bearman on tuba. For Cutting Edge Brass, the ensemble was conducted by Don Logie. Stuart Russell performed the electronic parts (diffusing them into quadrophonic sound) for Julia Usher’s Rumours of Cuts and Jenni Pinnock’s Brass and Bronze, alongside his own From Brass and Bells.

About Steve Drury (Musical Director and First Trumpet of Bespoke Brass)

STEVEN DRURY started playing the cornet in his local brass band in Essex during the 70’s and progressed to have played within the privileged ranks of the best brass ensembles in world, which include the Royal Artillery Staff Band on Principal Cornet, Black Dyke Mills Band on Flugel Horn, GUS Band on Principal Cornet, Sun Life Band on Flugel Horn and the Williams Fairey Band. With these bands he won the British Open Championships and the WMC World Music Concours. He has been involved with 26 CD recordings and many Radio and TV appearances, including memorable musical collaborations with Elton John, Sting, Lesley Garratt, LSO Brass and Dame Vera Lynn amongst many others.

Steven has taught brass in Essex for the past ten years and is a Tutor Mentor for Essex Music Services and Mentor for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. He received the Certificate in Education and was admitted a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music in brass teaching and awarded the Certificate of Teaching from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

He was deputy conductor of the Young Ambassadors Brass Band of Great Britain and is currently Director of Music of the Essex Youth Brass Ensemble, and is brass instructor to the Essex Young Peoples Orchestra and the Essex Youth Symphonic Wind Orchestra plus is professional brass instructor to the Danish FDF organisation.

Steven is a composer and arranger, and has several works on catalogue published by The Music Company (UK) Ltd.

Steven has now added acting to his experience having recently appeared in the ‘Master of the House’ scene of the Tom Hooper’s movie adaptation of ‘Les Miserables’
