Colchester Open Heritage Day organ trail, Sunday 14 September 2014

CNM presents a day of musical celebration bringing together Colchester organists, historic churches and organs, featuring FREE organ recitals of old favourites and new music from local composers, plus opportunities to try an organ yourself. Events include:

11:00-12:00am St Leonard’s-at-the-Hythe, Hythe Hill
Organist: Alan Parsons
Recital to include music by: Alan Parsons (A sound of sheer silence), J.S. Bach (four ‘Schübler’ chorales and Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland), Arvo Pärt (Spiegel im spiegel), Siegfried Karg-Elert and John Joubert.

From 11:15 – 11:45am United Reformed Church, Lion Walk
Organist: Ian Ray
Recital of works by J.S. Bach (Fantasia on ‘In Dulci Jubilo’ BWV 729), Howells (Aria), Cesar Franck (Adagio from Chorale no. 3), Alan Bullard (Ubi Caritas), Mark Bellis (Fantasia), Julia Usher (Magnitude), Jenni Pinnock (Circular Musings).
From 12:15 – 2:30 “Try the Organ Yourself” opportunities.

12:00 St James the Great, East Hill
Organist: Mark Terry
An exuberant recital including Mark Terry’s Voluntary.

2:00pm St Peter’s Church, 2 North Hill
Organist: Richard Lawn
100 years of Organ Music, including works by Alan Bullard, Alexander Blustin (Thaw and Piccadilly Circus), George Oldroyd (1st liturgical improvisation), Vaughan Williams (Prelude on Rhosymedre), Guy Eldridge (Pastorale), C Armstrong Gibbs (Jubilate Deo), Kenneth Leighton (Fanfare), John Ireland (Sursum Corda), Francis Jackson (Procession).

2:30 – 3:15pm Castle Methodist Church, Maidenburg St, near Castle
Organist: James Bowstead (Organ Scholar, Jesus College Oxford)
To include: Bowstead (Hymn Prelude on ‘Victory’), Buxtehude (Passacaglia in D minor, BuxWV 161), J.S. Bach (Valet will ich der geben, BWV 735), Alain (Variations sur un thème de Clément Janequin, JA 118), Karg-Elert (Chorale-Improvisation on ‘Nun Danket Alle Gott’, Op. 65, No. 59) plus works by Margaret Lucy Wilkins (A Joyful Noise), Cedric Peachey (Adagio Lamentoso), Alan Hilton (Contemplation), Thomas Lawrie (Fairground), Colin Blundell (Colchester Castle).

Organist: Colin Nicholson
Aurora Organ Recital: dramatic and colourful pieces by Martin Jones (Aurora), Tony Matthews (Voluntary for an Empty Space 1), Colin Blundell (The Legions / Exercise in the Park), Tim Torry (A Flourish of Bells), J.S. Bach and Buxtehude.
